How a yes or no reading works

Every card in the deck leans somewhere. The Sun is about as close to an unqualified yes as tarot gets. The Tower is a no to whatever you were planning, at least in its current shape. Most cards sit in between, and the useful part is the condition attached: yes if you're willing to start without guarantees, no while this is still unresolved.

So treat the answer as a lean, not a verdict. Read the context line, then the caution. If the card surprises you, notice whether you're relieved or disappointed. That reaction is often the real answer.

What every card leans toward

Yes

Clear green lights. The card itself is about things going well or opening up.

Leans yes

Yes, with a condition. Usually the condition is you doing your part.

It depends

Cards that point at a choice, a balance or timing. The answer hangs on something the question left out.

Leans no

Not now, or not like this. Often a no to the plan, not to what you want.

Can tarot really answer yes or no?

Tarot is better at why than at yes or no. A one-card yes or no reading is a quick gut check: it tells you which way the card leans and, more usefully, what the answer depends on. For anything that matters, read the card's full meaning or ask Raven for a fuller reading.

Do reversed cards mean no?

Some readers read every reversed card as a no. We don't, because it flattens too much. This draw uses upright cards only, which is how many readers do yes or no pulls, and each card's leaning comes with the context that changes it.

How should I ask a yes or no question?

Make it specific and about you: “Should I apply for this job?” works better than “Will things work out?” Ask once. Drawing again until you get the answer you want tells you what you want, which is worth knowing, but it isn't a reading.

Which tarot cards mean yes?

The clearest yes cards include the Sun, the Star, the World, the Ace of Cups, the Six of Wands and the Ten of Cups. The full list, grouped by how strongly each card leans, is on this page.

Which tarot cards mean no?

Cards that usually lean no include the Tower, the Three of Swords, the Ten of Swords, the Five of Pentacles and the Nine of Swords. Most of them say not now or not like this, rather than never.
