Virgo is the sign of discernment, careful attention and quiet service. Read with the Hermit: wisdom that comes from looking closely, alone, and sorting what’s true from what’s just loud.

The deeper meaning

The Hermit is the ninth step of the Major Arcana. Strength learned to hold what’s wild inside. The Hermit takes that steadiness somewhere quiet. It’s the last card before the Wheel of Fortune turns, and it makes sense that it comes here: before things change, someone has to go off alone and find out what they really think.

In real life the Hermit looks like a weekend with the phone off. A walk you take to think, not to get anywhere. Saying “I need to sit with this” and meaning it. Sometimes it’s a longer season: after a breakup, a move, a burnout, when company feels like noise and you need to hear yourself again.

The lantern doesn’t light the whole mountain. It lights the next step, and that is enough.

This card isn’t loneliness, though it can be lonely. It’s chosen distance. The Hermit steps back from consensus, from advice, from the scroll of other people’s opinions, because some truths can only be reached by yourself. And the light he carries isn’t only for him. In most traditions the Hermit holds his lantern up so others can find the path too.

The shadow of the Hermit is withdrawal that has forgotten its purpose. Solitude becomes hiding. Reflection becomes rumination. Handled well, this card sends you inward and brings you back with something clearer. Handled poorly, it becomes a cave you stop coming out of.

Feya After Dark

In the Feya card

Our Hermit isn’t standing still. He is mid-step on a rocky ledge, leaning into the climb, one hand on his staff and the other holding his lantern out ahead. His eyes are on the light, or on the dark just past it. He is looking, not posing.

The lantern is ornate and heavy, with a star burning inside it. The light is modest: it reaches his hand, his sleeve, a little of the night. It’s the card in one object. You don’t need to see everything. You need to see enough.

The gnarled staff is a branch, not a sceptre. It’s support for a long walk, the kind of thing you carry when you expect the road to be rough.

The cloak edged with stars and a crescent carries the night sky with him. Solitude, in this card, isn’t emptiness. It has its own light in it.

Below him, a village glows beside a river, with a tower among the pines. The world hasn’t gone anywhere. He’s simply high enough above it to see it clearly, and close enough to go back.

Love & relationships

The Hermit in a love reading often asks for space: time to understand what you want, or time for someone else to understand what they want. It isn’t automatically a breakup card. It’s a card of honest distance, and sometimes of a slow, careful kind of love.

If you’re single

This may be a season for your own company. Not as punishment, and not forever. Use it to find out what you actually want, apart from what you’ve been told to want.

If you’re together

One of you may need room. That can be healthy, if it’s said out loud. The card asks for space that’s explained, not silence that has to be guessed at.

If you’re apart

Distance with a purpose. The Hermit suggests time alone to understand what happened, rather than rushing to repair it or replace it.

Career & work

Deep work, research, study, mentoring, or a step back to reconsider your direction. The Hermit favors expertise built slowly and work done without an audience. It can also point to a period of feeling out of step with colleagues. Sometimes that’s a sign you’re onto something they aren’t.

Money

Keep your own counsel. Tune out the hype and the tips. The Hermit favors careful, independent thinking about money, and spending less on keeping up appearances. It’s a good card for reviewing, not for impulsive moves.

Some answers can only be heard when the room goes quiet.

Inner life

The Hermit’s inner work is learning to trust your own knowing. It’s easy to borrow certainty from other people. This card asks you to go without it for a while, carry your own small light, and find out that it is enough to walk by.

Reversed

Reversed, the Hermit usually means the relationship with solitude has tipped too far one way. It can mean:

  • Isolation. Distance that was meant to help has turned into cutting yourself off.
  • Loneliness. You didn’t choose to be alone, and it hurts. That deserves to be said plainly.
  • Avoiding the inner work. Staying busy and surrounded so you never have to hear what the quiet would tell you.
  • Coming back. The retreat is ending, and it’s time to bring what you found back to other people.

Next to the Four of Cups, reversed Hermit leans toward withdrawal that has gone flat. Next to the Three of Cups, toward a welcome return to company.

It depends, and often it means “not yet”. The Hermit asks you to step back and think before acting. The answer may become clear once you’ve had quiet time with it.

Space, reflection, or a slow, thoughtful kind of love. It can mean someone needs time alone to understand their feelings. It isn’t automatically a breakup card.

What does it mean as feelings, or how someone sees me?

They may be keeping their feelings private while they work them out, or see you as wise, deep, a little hard to reach. It can describe someone who cares but needs distance to know what they want.
