Leo is the sign of the lion: heart, pride, courage, appetite. Read with this card, it’s the fire of a big heart, held rather than unleashed.

The deeper meaning

Strength opens the second stretch of the Major Arcana. The Chariot learned to steer the world from the outside. Strength turns that power inward. The question is no longer whether you can win, but whether you can stay kind to yourself and others while something wild moves in you.

In everyday life this card looks small from the outside. Not snapping back. Sitting with a panic until it passes. Telling someone the truth warmly instead of cruelly. Wanting something badly and not letting the wanting make you smaller or meaner. It’s the courage that doesn’t get applause because nobody sees it.

Strength isn’t the absence of the lion. It’s the hand resting on its head.

The lion in this card isn’t an enemy. It’s appetite, anger, fear, love, sexuality, pride: the parts of us that are alive and hungry. Older traditions sometimes read the card as mastery over the beast. We read it as friendship with it. The Thoth deck even renames the card Lust, which says something honest: the energy here is meant to be lived with, not destroyed.

Handled well, Strength is steadiness that doesn’t need to prove itself. Handled poorly, it becomes either suppression (gritted teeth, pretending you don’t feel what you feel) or giving the lion the reins. The card sits between the two, patient, a little tender, and very sure.

Our Strength is a card of rest, not struggle. The woman isn’t prising the lion’s jaws shut. She is sitting on the ground beside it, one hand on its brow and the other cupping its jaw. Her eyes are closed. So are the lion’s. Whatever battle there was has already become trust.

The golden infinity sign floating above her head is the card’s oldest sign: a patience that doesn’t run out, a loop of energy that feeds itself instead of burning out.

The lion is huge, and its paw rests in the foreground, bigger than her hand. The art doesn’t pretend the force is small. It shows it at ease.

The gold laurel and the deep red mantle give her a quiet authority. Red is the color of heat and blood; she wears it over cream, passion wrapped around calm.

The white lilies grow around them both, flowers of gentleness and purity in the old symbolism, blooming right next to the animal.

Behind them, a hill fort stands above a river valley, and a round gold light hangs low in the dusk. The walls are in the distance. Here, out in the open, she doesn’t need them.

Love & relationships

Strength in love is about tenderness that isn’t weakness. It favors patience, honesty about desire, and handling each other’s difficult sides with care. It’s also a card of healthy attraction: real want, held with respect.

If you’re single

Confidence that doesn’t perform. You don’t have to be louder or more polished to be wanted. Strength suggests letting someone see you as you are, including the parts you usually keep on a leash.

If it’s new

The attraction may be strong. Strength says you can enjoy that without rushing it, and without pretending you feel less than you do.

If you’re together

Someone’s temper, fear or old hurt may be surfacing. The card asks for patience and warmth, not rescue and not control. It also asks you to protect yourself: gentleness is not the same as tolerating anything.

Career & work

Quiet authority. You may be handling a difficult person, a tense team or pressure that would make most people snap, and doing it with steadiness. Strength favors influence over force: persuading, calming, holding your nerve. It can also ask you to stop shrinking at work and back yourself.

Money

Self-command with money: resisting the impulse buy, not panicking in a downturn, being patient with a slow plan. If money is tied to fear or pride, this card asks you to look at the feeling before you act on it.

The bravest thing you do today may be the thing nobody sees.

Inner life

Strength asks you to befriend what you’ve been trying to tame. Fear, anger, longing: none of them is going away, and none of them needs to. The work is learning to sit beside them, hand on their head, until they’re calm enough to listen.

Reversed

Reversed, Strength usually isn’t about weakness. It’s about the relationship with the lion going wrong. It can mean:

  • Self-doubt. The courage is there, but you’ve stopped believing it is.
  • Forcing yourself. White-knuckling through, suppressing what you feel instead of meeting it.
  • Shame about wanting. Treating your own appetite, ambition or anger as something to hide.
  • The lion loose. A temper, a craving or a fear running things for a while.

Next to the Devil, reversed Strength leans toward a habit or desire that has taken over. Next to the Star, toward confidence quietly coming back.

  1. What am I trying to overpower that might respond better to patience?
  2. Which of my feelings do I treat as an enemy?
  3. Where would gentleness actually take more courage than force?
  4. What do I want that I’ve been ashamed to want?
  5. When was the last time I was quietly brave?

Short answers

Is Strength a yes or no card?

It leans yes, especially if the question is whether you can handle something. The yes comes with a condition: patience. Force and hurry go against this card.

What does Strength mean in love?

Tenderness with backbone. Attraction held with respect, patience with someone’s hard edges, and the confidence to be seen as you are. It isn’t a card for tolerating harm in the name of being kind.

What does it mean as feelings, or how someone sees me?

They may see you as steady, warm and brave, or feel a strong but carefully held attraction. It can also describe someone working hard to stay gentle about feelings that run deep.

Why is Strength number VIII in some decks and XI in others?

Older decks, including the Marseille tradition, put Justice at VIII and Strength at XI. The Golden Dawn swapped them to fit their astrological scheme, and the Rider-Waite deck followed. The Thoth deck kept the older order and calls the card Lust. Feya uses Strength at VIII. Both orders are genuine traditions.

Is Strength a Leo card?

Yes, in the Golden Dawn system Strength belongs to Leo, the sign of the lion. The pairing is one of the easiest to see. We offer it as tradition, not prediction.
