Water of Water is feeling at its purest: receptive, reflective, deep. Her reach into Cancer adds care and home: someone who can hold other people’s feelings without losing her own.

The deeper meaning

Queens are the court card of mastery turned inward. The Page discovered a feeling and the Knight carried it out into the world. The Queen of Cups has made feeling her home. She’s Water of Water, the suit’s element in its purest form.

In real life she’s the person everyone calls when something is wrong, and who somehow knew before they called. Her strength is attention. She can sit with sorrow without rushing to fix it, and she can hear the difference between what someone says and what they mean.

She isn’t calm because she feels less. She’s calm because she’s stopped being afraid of what she feels.

That’s what separates her from simple sensitivity. The Page is moved by everything. The Queen is still moved by everything, and she has learned to stay upright. She doesn’t protect herself by staying shallow. Her depth is the protection.

Our Queen of Cups sits at the very edge of the sea, on a stone throne set against a carved shell alcove. She doesn’t look out at the water. She looks down into her cup, both hands around it, and one bare foot has slipped into the tide. Her attention is complete and quiet.

Her cup is covered, with a lid and a small finial. What she holds is kept, not spilled. Her feelings are private and precious, and she chooses what to pour out.

The seahorses carved on either arm of her throne are creatures of the sea, and among seahorses it’s the father who carries the young. They’re a quiet image of care that doesn’t follow the usual rules.

Her bare foot in the water is the whole card in one gesture. She’s in contact with feeling, not watching it from the shore, and in no danger of being swept away.

The open oyster and its pearl at her feet are something beautiful made slowly, in the dark, from an irritation. That’s what depth can do with pain.

Behind her, a full moon lights a calm bay and a single sailboat. The sea is quiet, and so is she.
