The deeper meaning

Tens are the end of a cycle, and Pentacles is the suit of what you can touch. So the Ten of Pentacles is the suit’s real completion. The Eight learned the craft. The Nine enjoyed the garden alone. The Ten is when the garden becomes a place for other people: something built well enough that it no longer depends on any one person to hold it up.

In real life, this card rarely looks grand. It looks like the kitchen table that three generations have eaten at. A grandmother’s recipe. A house that’s paid off, a savings account set up for someone not yet grown, a family business, a way of doing things that someone taught you and you’ll teach someone else.

Wealth, in this card, is what’s still standing after you stop holding it up.

Our Ten of Pentacles is an evening meal in a stone courtyard. Three generations share one table: a gray-haired grandmother, a young couple leaning toward each other with wine, a bearded grandfather talking with a boy who leans on his elbows to listen, and a small girl on the rug below. It isn’t a portrait of wealth. It’s a portrait of people who have time for each other.

The ten pentacles are built into the place itself: nine medallions set into the walls, pillars and arch, and the tenth pressed into the clay of a big jar in the corner. The wealth is the house. It surrounds the family rather than sitting on the table.

The grandmother’s hand rests on the head of a big brown-and-white dog. The oldest person at the table and the most settled animal: continuity, the steady ones who keep everyone else calm.

The little girl and the rabbit on the rug are the future, absorbed in something small and alive, safe enough not to notice the adults at all.

The table is set with bread, grapes, pomegranates, candles and a pitcher on a deep red cloth. Plenty, but ordinary plenty. A good meal, not a feast for show.
