Our King of Cups doesn’t sit on a throne tossed on a rough sea. He sits on a stone terrace above a calm bay, leaning back, crowned, one arm resting on the throne and his golden cup held easily in the other hand. He isn’t looking at the cup. He’s looking past it, out over the water.

His ease is the card. He holds the cup lightly, the way you hold something you’re no longer afraid of spilling.

The small carved figure of a child on the arm of his throne stands just below his resting hand. Tenderness and innocence, kept close by the one in charge.

The dog resting its head on the step at his feet is trust. Animals settle near people who are calm.

The shells carved behind his head and into the step, with a conch and a starfish at his feet, place his power in the sea, even as he sits above it.

Behind him, a full moon, the mountains and a single sailboat on flat water. The storm is over, or hasn’t come. Either way, he knows how to sail.
