Pentacles are Earth in almost every deck, whether the suit is called Pentacles, Coins or Disks. The swaps some decks make between Swords and Wands rarely touch this suit.

Our Ace of Pentacles has no hand reaching out of a cloud. The coin is already here, resting in an overgrown corner of a garden, half hidden by leaves and fruit. Nobody is offering it to you. You have to notice it.

The snail on the rim of the coin sets the card’s tempo. Earth grows slowly, and the snail isn’t in a hurry. Whatever starts here will take time, and that isn’t a flaw.

The fruit at its base, split figs and strawberries, is the promise: what this kind of beginning can turn into when it’s tended. The mushrooms beside them grow from what’s been left to rest in the soil.

The leaves engraved on the coin make it look grown as much as minted, as if the gold and the garden were made of the same stuff.

The white butterfly drifting near the edge is change that doesn’t announce itself. You only see it if you’re looking.

Beyond the stone arch, a path winds up to a town on the hill between the cypresses. The card doesn’t show you the destination up close. It shows you the road is there.
