Our Three of Cups is three women mid-toast, arms stretched as high as they’ll go. The one in the middle is laughing with her eyes closed. The other two tip their faces up toward the raised goblets. They’re holding on to each other as much as to the cups: an arm around a waist, a hand at a back. This is joy with bodies in it.

The three women are different from one another: red hair and a pale dress, dark hair and lavender, black curls and a dark wrap with a gold band on her arm. The circle doesn’t require sameness. It’s made of people who are glad to be together.

The grapes and the split pomegranate on the draped table are harvest fruits, old symbols of plenty and of life’s sweetness breaking open. There is enough here to share.

The wisteria hanging from the pillar behind them blooms all at once and is gone in a few weeks. Good seasons pass. That’s a reason to mark them, not to hold back.

The white rabbit at their feet looks up at the celebration, a small, gentle witness to it.
