What Your Moon Sign Needs When You Bleed
In astrology the Moon rules the body’s monthly rhythm. What each of the 12 natal Moon signs might need during your period, and how to care for yourself.

Your Sun sign tells you how you shine. Your Moon sign tells you how you need to be looked after, and few things test that like the first day of your period. In traditional astrology the Moon rules the body’s fluids and tides, the rhythms of the month, nourishment, mothering and the emotional body. So if you want to know what comfort actually means to you when you are bleeding, the Moon in your birth chart is the first place to look.
Below you’ll find each of the 12 natal Moon signs and what you might need during your period. This is a language for self-knowledge, not medicine. Nothing here replaces a doctor, and nothing here says your chart causes anything in your body. It is simply a way of asking a better question: what does care look like for me, specifically?
Why the Moon, and not the Sun
The Moon is the part of astrology that handles what repeats: meals, sleep, moods, the month. It rules Cancer and is associated with the 4th house, the part of the chart astrologers read for home, roots and private life. Its own cycle, about 29.5 days from new moon to new moon, is close to many menstrual cycles, which is part of why the two have been paired for so long. Real cycles run about 21 to 35 days on average and vary.
Your Sun sign describes what you are building. Your Moon sign describes what you need when you stop building: the food, the room, the kind of company. During your period, when many people find their patience and stamina lower than usual, those needs get louder. Listening to them is not indulgence. It is information.
To find your Moon sign you need your birth date, place and ideally time. Then read your section and try one idea for a single cycle.
The fire Moons: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Moon in Aries
You don’t like being slowed down, and a period can feel like an insult to your schedule. The trick is to give your impatience somewhere to go. Short bursts may suit you better than long rests: a brisk walk, ten minutes of stretching, one task you can finish and cross off. Say what you need plainly and early, before irritation says it for you. Let yourself be grumpy out loud for five minutes, then be done with it.
Moon in Leo
You need warmth and, honestly, a little attention. Your period is not the time to pretend you are fine for everyone else’s benefit. Tell someone you trust that you are having a hard day and let them fuss. Wear the soft thing that still makes you feel good-looking. Make your bed beautiful: clean sheets, the good pillow, a candle. A Leo Moon rallies when it feels cherished, so spend this week with people who are generous with praise.
Moon in Sagittarius
Feeling hemmed in is worse for you than feeling tired. If you can’t go anywhere, travel in your head: a long novel, a film set somewhere you want to see, a podcast that makes you laugh. Get outside under open sky, even briefly. Keep plans loose so commitments don’t feel like a cage. Your sense of humor is your best comfort, so watch something ridiculous and let it work.
The earth Moons: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Moon in Taurus
You find comfort through the senses. Your period asks for good bread, a heavy blanket, a warm bath, a slow meal eaten sitting down. Keep a small kit ready before you need it: the comfortable underwear, the tea you like, the hot water bottle. Taurus Moons hate being rushed, so protect your mornings and say no to anything that means hurrying. Pleasure, for you, is not a reward. It is how you steady yourself.
Moon in Virgo
You feel better when things are in order, and a period can make you feel slightly out of charge of your own body. Give yourself that order: a tracker, a stocked drawer, a clean bathroom, a list for the day with three items instead of twelve. Watch the inner critic, which tends to get louder now. When it starts listing everything you did wrong this month, answer it with one thing you did right, written down.
Moon in Capricorn
You are the one most likely to work straight through and tell nobody. That is a skill, not a requirement. Plan your period like you plan everything else: look at the calendar, see which days tend to be heavy, and move the hardest meetings off them where you can. Rest counts as part of the plan, not a break from it. A quiet evening routine you repeat every cycle may comfort you more than any treat.
The air Moons: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Moon in Gemini
Your mind doesn’t stop because your body wants it to. Rather than forcing silence, give your brain light things to chew on: a crossword, a gossipy phone call, three short articles instead of one heavy book. Talk about how you feel, since you often understand it only once you have said it. Journaling suits you, even in fragments. Change rooms, change playlists. Variety is how a Gemini Moon rests.
Moon in Libra
You need things to feel pleasant and fair, and pain or irritability can make you feel you are failing at being nice. You are allowed to be less agreeable this week. Surround yourself with beauty that asks nothing of you: flowers, a tidy room, music you love. Choose easy company. If there is a conflict you have been smoothing over, write it down now, and decide on a calmer day whether to raise it.
Moon in Aquarius
You often process feelings by stepping back from them, and your period may make you want more distance than usual. Take the solo evening, the long walk alone, the phone on silent. You may prefer understanding your cycle to being comforted through it, so tracking patterns can feel like care to you. Friendship often matters more than romance for an Aquarius Moon. One text from the right friend can do more than a whole evening out.
The water Moons: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Moon in Cancer
The Moon rules Cancer, so this is the Moon at home. You feel everything, and your period can bring memories, homesickness and a strong pull toward the people who feel like family. Cook something you grew up eating. Stay in. Call whoever mothered you. Nesting is not avoidance for you. It is how you come back to yourself. Make the house ready before the day arrives: clean sheets, a full cupboard.
Moon in Scorpio
You feel things at full depth and would prefer that no one watched you do it. Privacy is care, for you. Take a long, hot bath with the door locked. Let yourself feel what comes, including anger, without having to explain it. Scorpio Moons often see sharply while bleeding, so keep a journal close and write down what you notice. Just wait to act on it. The strongest feelings of the week deserve a second look afterward.
Moon in Pisces
You absorb the moods around you, and during your period your edges get thinner. Guard your inputs: less news, fewer group chats, more music. Water helps you settle, whether that is a bath, a long shower or rain on the window. Dreams may feel vivid, so write them down. Pisces Moons need gentleness without having to earn it. Let yourself drift for an afternoon and don’t call it wasted.
How to try this for one cycle
Read your Moon sign’s paragraph a few days before your period and pick one thing from it. Just one. Set it up ahead of time, because the first day of bleeding is not the day to go shopping for the good tea.
Then pay attention. Did it help? Did it feel like you, or like a costume? Your Moon sign is a starting point, and the rest of your chart, your history and your body all have a say. If the Aries advice bores you and the Taurus advice makes you sigh with relief, trust that. Maybe you have planets in Taurus. Maybe you just need bread.
If you share your cycle with a partner, this is a good paragraph to show them. It is easier to be looked after well when the other person has the instructions.
When I am bleeding, what do I wish someone would do for me without my having to ask?
Which part of my Moon sign’s description felt true, and which felt like someone else’s life?
And if your period brings pain that stops you from living your life, or changes in a way that worries you, that is a conversation for a doctor. Astrology can tell you how you like to be cared for. It can’t tell you what is happening inside.
Feya is for reflection, not medical advice. Cycle tracking is not birth control, and changes in your period are worth raising with a doctor.
